A practical and compassionate approach
Anxiety is not simply something you should be able to “think your way out of.” It can involve thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and very real nervous system responses.
Depending on your needs and the therapist you work with, counselling may draw from approaches such as CBT, Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, mindfulness-based approaches, and other evidence-based approaches. Together we can explore what is maintaining the anxiety while developing skills and strategies that feel realistic and sustainable in your everyday life.
Over time you may begin to notice:
- Less time caught in worry or overthinking
- Greater ability to settle after stress
- More confidence in handling uncertainty
- Increased awareness of what your mind and body need
- More flexibility in how you respond to difficult thoughts and emotions
- Greater ability to be present and engaged in your life
Your nervous system can learn new ways of responding.
With support and practice, it can become easier to move through anxiety and stress and return to a greater sense of steadiness, safety, and connection.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my anxiety is "bad enough" for counselling
You don’t need to reach a certain level of distress or have a diagnosis to seek support. If worry, stress, overthinking, physical tension, or avoidance are affecting your well-being, or making everyday life harder, counselling may be helpful.
Can counselling help with the physical symptoms of anxiety?
Yes. Anxiety can involve both the mind and body. Alongside exploring thoughts and emotions, our therapists may help you notice and work with the nervous system responses such as tension, restlessness, racing heart, shallow breathing, and hypervigalence.
Will counselling just teach me to think more positively?
No. While approaches such as CBT can help you examine unhelpful thinking patterns, anxiety counselling is not about forcing yourself to think positively. We may also work with emotions, behaviours, nervous system responses, patterns of avoidance, and the circumstances contributing to your stress.
What if I don't know why I'm anxious?
That’s perfectly ok. You don’t need to know where your anxiety comes from before beginning therapy. Counselling can help you become curious about patterns, triggers, experiences, and nervous system responses that may be contributing to how you feel.
How long does anxiety counselling take?
There isn’t one timeline that fits everyone. Some people come to therapy with a focused concern and find a shorter period of counselling helpful, while others choose to work on longer-standing patterns over more time. Your therapist can hep you decide what makes sense for your needs and goals.
